The Team

  • Host of Oncology for the Inquisitive Mind

Michael is a Medical Oncologist at the Princess Alexandra Hospital (Metro South) after completing his fellowship at the Olivia Newton-John Cancer Centre in Melbourne, Australia. This fellowship focused on head and neck cancer and early drug trials - the frontier of precision and novel therapy development. In 2022, Dr Fernando was accepted into the Royal Australian College of Physicians as a specialist. In his free time, Michael loves hiking, honing his skills as a novelist, and enjoying the company of his dog, Beans, and wife, Monika.

Before embarking on the oncology journey, Michael completed his medical school training at Monash University. He has traversed various healthcare centres during the last decade. This has shaped him as a highly skilled clinician with a patient-first approach, while side hustles like this project allow him to fulfil his passion for medical education, theatre and the arts.

  • Host of Oncology for the Inquisitive Mind

Josh is a Medical Oncologist with a diverse medical skill set. He currently holds public appointments at Monash Health and Bayside Health. Prior to this, Josh completed a prestigious fellowship at the Garvan Institute of Medical Research and The Kinghorn Cancer Centre in Sydney, Australia, specialising in breast and genitourinary cancer under the mentorship of Professor Elgene Lim and Professor Anthony Joshua. In the little time not spent working, researching and podcasting, he enjoys spending time with his wife and their young children, dabbling in music and plotting his next great prank or dad joke.

Before finding his calling in Medical Oncology, Josh had a varied career. His experience means he faces all professional challenges with good humour while providing his patients with a compassionate ear and a patient smile. He is passionate about education in all its forms, and this podcast is very much his brainchild.

Taryn is a public relations and media professional with over ten years of experience working with leading national and international brands. Taryn is also an Account Director at Sydney-based financial services agency Madden & Assoc.

Our Story:

This podcast began with an idea and a dream. In 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, four young colleagues started a remote journal club to make sense of complex oncology topics. As the pandemic dragged on, days became months, and months turned into endless lockdowns. Educational opportunities were replaced by the demands of a strained healthcare system. After a nudge from Taryn, Josh and Michael decided to take their journal club to the airwaves as a podcast. With many re-recordings, endless editing, and technical glitches, Oncology for the Inquisitive Mind went live. Now with over 200 episodes and viewership in more than 150 countries, we continue to bring experts to a global audience to talk about oncology, cancer, and everything in between.

This podcast is proudly supported by our foundation partners, with educational grants from Pfizer Australia and Merck Australia (and previously Gilead Sciences).

We are excited to partner with industry and like-minded individuals to improve the quality and content of this podcast. The educational grants we receive do not influence our opinions, content, or topics. Our integrity, independence, and terrible dad jokes are at the heart of what we do here.
